Project Management

As a Partner of Donald & Wishart for 11 years and Divisional Director of Binnie's for 5 years I have been responsible for the Project Management of a wide range of jobs. This experience ranges from individual Feasibility Studies to major civil engineering projects.
smalldoun.jpgIndividual projects include feasibility studies for Forth Valley Enterprise examining the problems associated with developing industrial estates on the Carse at Falkirk and advice to Cranhill Housing Co-Operative on the redevelopment of existing housing in Easterhouse underlain by extensive shallow mineworkings. Major projects include the Dounreay Sea Outfall Refurbishment Project, a £10 million scheme for the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority and the Aberdeen Long Sea Outfall for Grampian Regional Council - value £25 million.
Project Management in these cases included preparation of initial studies, cost estimates, outline and detail design, preparation of contract documents, contract management and final measurement including claims resolution.
Recent projects include a £2.5m business and industrial development at Alloa where I acted as Project Manager, ensuring that structural designs and drawings were prepared and delivered on time as well as supervising work on site and acting as the Engineer’s agent. Over a period of two years until mid 2001 I acted as a sub-consultant to Binnie Black & Veatch who were Technical Advisers to MBIA/AMBAC, bankers for the £120m Almond Valley Seafield and Esk PFI project. The work involved close monitoring on site of this fast-tracked project, assessment of progress, evaluation of interim claims and milestone payments and review of technical progress on commissioning. In 2002 I acted as the Designer's representative on site for initial phase of the realignment of the East Coast Main Line at Dolphingstone, east of Edinburgh.

CDM Regulations

With the introduction of the CDM Regulations I was responsible for the implementation of procedures in the Scottish Regional Office of BBV. I have been personally responsible as Planning Supervisor for a number of projects involving some 20 lifeboat stations throughout Scotland for the RNLI, demolition projects including use of explosives and the new town centre at Hamilton for Hamilton Ahead. I have carried out Planning Supervisor's representative duties for five projects for Binnie Black & Veatch including the Millennium Wheel boat lift at Falkirk.

Soil Mechanics & Foundations

Having gained a Masters Degree in Soils Mechanics and Foundations at Glasgow University I was responsible in Donald & Wishart for all projects involving those disciplines. I was responsible for carrying out and directing site investigations for housing and industrials sites, including those underlain by contaminated ground and by shallow mineworkings. In addition I was responsible for the site investigation for Aberdeen Long Sea Outfall tunnel which involved an extensive marine borehole programme as well as the usual land based investigation. I was also responsible for the design of slopes and embankments, the investigation of failures such as the West Street Tunnel collapse, and for preparing reports as the competent person under The Mines & Quarries (Tips) Regulations for a number of quarries throughout the Central Belt of Scotland.

diffuserPublic Health Engineering

I have extensive experience in long sea outfalls such as the Aberdeen Long Sea Outfall - a 2500m long hard rock tunnel outfall - and refurbishment of the Dounreay Sea Outfall involving relining of an existing outfall.
Other recent work on long sea outfalls includes the design and supervison of repairs, cleaning and alterations to an outfall on the west coast of Scotland, (1998), re-assessing another existing outfall for a commercial organisation also on the west coast of Scotland (1999). I reported on seven sea outfalls for the Aberdeen Wastewater Project - a PFI scheme (1999) and was subsequently appointed jointly by the client – NoSWA and the Joint Venture as independent expert on the valuation of and execution of repairs to the underwater assets. I also prepared pre-tender reports on nine outfalls involved in the Moray Coast PFI scheme. More recently I have provided advice on outfalls on the east coast of Scotland.
I have knowledge of Scottish legislation including the implications of the Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive and experience in the design of trunk sewerage schemes, drainage schemes and sewage works design.

plantI also have experience of the upgrading of water supply networks and wrote a computer program, prior to the general avilability of commercial programs, specifically to assist with the upgrading of fire fighting and domestic water supply schemes for hospitals in central Scotland. I was Project Director for the analysis of the Moray Reservoirs network for Grampian Regional Council.

Environmental Engineering

I have been involved in the reclamation of derelict land for over 25 years. Early experience included reclamation of coal bings in Hamilton and in County Durham. Subsequently I have been involved in the investigation of former industrial sites for redevelopment, including gas works and other contaminated sites, as well as further work on the reclamation of bings.
As part of an investigation considering a proposed housing development at Newton near Rutherglen I intiated research on the effect on plant growth of reclaimed materials from the coal bing as well as on long term settlement characteristics of re-graded ground using loaded skips to provide realistic modelling of foundation loads.

Marine Engineering

PortpatrickAs a Partner in Donald & Wishart I was responsible for overseeing the design of coastal defences, rubble mound breakwaters, reports on conditions of quay walls and the design of canal works on the Forth & Clyde and Union Canals.

diving.jpgIn addition my work on the design and construction of long sea outfalls has given me experience of working in the marine environment and the problems associated with it as well as the management of diving teams carrying out investigation, construction, inspection and repair works.
